What the knowledge will be:

Our PSHE Curriculum sets out to provide pupils with the invaluable knowledge that will help them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing and teach them the fundamental characteristics of healthy relationships. Our PSHE Curriculum sets out to provide pupils with the invaluable knowledge that will help them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing and teach them the fundamental characteristics of healthy relationships. Through the roots of our curriculum, personal empowerment, and preparation for adult life, we provide children with the knowledge they need to show respect to all members of their diverse communities.

The skills this curriculum area will develop:

Through our PSHE curriculum, we aim to develop a sense of self-esteem and self-worth: through this, children will be empowered to recognise a variety of issues, such as unhealthy relationships, online conduct or mental/physical health. Key PSHE knowledge will enable pupils to seek appropriate support and safeguard themselves from any difficulties they may face. As a school, we have made the deliberate decision to teach the online safety elements of the computing curriculum within PSHE. We aim to provide all our pupils with the initial building blocks necessary to embrace the challenges of a happy and successful adult life.

Why we have chosen to do it this way:

The PSHE curriculum delivers the same unit titles in each year group at the same time of year to ensure consistency across year groups and progression over time.

Autumn 1 – Family and Relationships is taught here as the first unit in the school year as this links to friendships and supports the building of new relationships in the new academic year.

Autumn 2 – Health and Wellbeing is taught here to ensure consistency throughout the year groups.

Spring 1 – Online Safety is taught here, after Christmas when a number of children have received new digital devices at Christmas and to tie in with Safer Internet Day – to maximise impact.

Spring 2 – Safety and Changing Body is taught here as this leads on from online safety.

Summer 1 – Citizenship is taught here to ensure consistency throughout the year groups.

Summer 2 – Economic Wellbeing is taught here to ensure consistency throughout the year groups. Transition is taught here to support moving year groups. Identity is taught in Year 6 at this time due to the nature of this topic and the maturity of the children in Year 6 at this time of year.
