Home Learning

Home learning plays a role in every class and supports a child’s learning process.

We do not set homework for the sake of it, believing that learning at home must be purposeful and help to consolidate learning.

You can view our Home Learning Policy here.

What to expect.

Home Learning is the consolidation and /or extension of learning, as well as enrichment opportunities outside the classroom so as to broaden children’s understanding.

Home Learning is valuable to children in that it helps to develop independent learning, as well as personal work disciplines, such as time management and planning to meet deadlines.

We ask that reading is the main focus and priority of any learning at home as we recognise the importance of reading for every child. We ask that every child reads at home every day if and where possible.

Parents have differing views about Home Learning and through our approach we aim to provide a range of opportunities that suit every parental preference and every family situation. We hope that providing a wide scope of home learning opportunities and styles that all children will have the chance to engage in Home Learning of some sort, even if this is just reading independently every day.

We do not set weekly spellings as we teach spellings at the school without the use of weekly spelling tests. As a school, we believe in the importance of the teaching of spelling rather than the testing of spelling, learning a set of words in isolation.

Knowledge, Conceptual Organisers

Every half term, class teachers will provide parents with a curriculum letter which shares the learning for the half term.

Each half term curriculum letter will be accompanied by subject knowledge /conceptual organisers.

These organisers provide a reference point for key vocabulary and learning that the children will be learning in specific curriculum subjects over the half term.

Class teachers will provide parents and children with activity ideas that they can utilise at home to help their children use and retain the knowledge contained in the knowledge organisers. Retention of knowledge is vital for children, knowledge organisers support this retention.

Curriculum letters and knowledge organisers are located in the School News tab on the website for reference.

Other Home Learning Opportunities

We set a termly Reading Challenge for children to engage with. Each termly challenge consists of a number of reading activities that children need to complete throughout the term. Once complete, the children return their finished challenge record to their class teacher. Completed termly reading challenges are rewarded with badges in celebration assembly.
