What the knowledge will be:
We believe that musicality is within every child and that it is our role as educators to spark that musical curiosity in all of our pupils.
Pupils will experience a wide range of musical genres and experience the history of music through listening, composing and performing. Our pupils will learn to develop:
· a technical knowledge, being able to play an instrument and read the appropriate notation system.
· an understanding of the Constructive components of music (e.g. the elements)
· appreciation of the Expressive elements of music through listening and to be confident in composing and experimenting creatively utilising their technical and constructive skills.
The skills this curriculum area will develop:
Musical notation, listening skills, improvisation, memorisation, composition, musicianship, performance and playing or singing as part of an ensemble.
Our Music Curriculum at Neroche follows Charanga's Original Scheme. This curriculum is built around three main areas:
1. Listening and Responding Music
2. Understanding and Using the Language of Music
3. Developing Performance Awareness Skills
Due to the structure of this spiral curriculum, the following elements of music are taught throughout each teaching unit: Pulse/ Beat/ Metre, Rhythm, Pitch (Melody), Tempo, Dynamics, Timbre and Texture. Our music curriculum is delivered through a rich and diverse repertoire of music.
Through whole-school singing and whole-class instrumental lessons, pupils at Neroche develop as confident and creative life-long musicians.
Why we have chosen to do it this way:
We believe that Music needs to be a part of children’s everyday lives due to the connections it allows us to make within our communities in our ever-changing world. Our music curriculum aims to provide all students with high-quality progressive music education which engages and inspires them to develop a life-long love of music, increases their self-confidence, creativity, and imagination. We hope to inspire pupils to have music at the centre of their everyday lives.
